Texas Showcase League offers showcase tournaments throughout the summer and fall. Their venues include various colleges, universities, and professional stadiums throughout the state. Divisions 15U/16U & 17U/18U, 4 game guarantee, *pool winners advance to championship play. 

Be a part of one of the biggest used book sales around by attending the Friends of the Abilene Public LIbrary's Annual Book Sale at your Abilene Convention Center. You'll find the best deals around on a wide selection of books, movies, music, children's books, and more. All proceeds from the sale goes towards benefiting your Abilene Public Library. The majority of all the materials in the sale come from your donations to the library and you will be able to build your personal library at a fraction of the cost. Cash and checks will be accepted at this event, or feel free to pay with your debit and credit cards (sorry, American Express not accepted). The final day of the event is known as the Bag-O-Books Sale where $6 will get you a bag and you can take from the sale whatever you can fit into it. Don't miss out on your opportunity to take advantage of this wonderful fundraiser, of which was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID.

In Virginia, high school football is a way of life. And with such recognition, comes powerful emotions. In 1971 high school football was everything to the people of Alexandria. But when the local school board was forced to integrate an all black school with an all white school, the very foundation of football's great tradition was put to the test.

Best in the West JV and Freshman Volleyball. This is for teams only. Age Groups: 13-18. Your team must provide a coach. There will be no practice built in, only games. Teams can be made up of school teams, club teams, or just a group of friends wanting to play together. Teams will be guaranteed three matches per week. All teams must provide a volunteer scorekeeper and two line judges for each of their matches.

Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

This exhibition will highlight the early history of the State Epileptic Colony in Abilene through over 50 photographs from The Grace’s permanent history collection. 

 Texas Photographic Society29: The International Competition.

This exhibition highlights just a small portion of the rich history of music, dance, and entertainment in Abilene’s Hispanic/Latino community. Music and dance are an integral part of Hispanic/Latino culture, as they incorporate native and Spanish traditions to create a unique blend of rhythms, beats, movements, and lyrics. Abilene has a long history and tradition of conjunto music and ballet folklorico, both of which are represented in this exhibition.

 

David Small works with watercolor, pen and ink, and pastels. His later works have a much softer look, but they continue to include his trademark attention to small details that beg to be poured over again and again. This 2021 exhibition will be the last public display of Small’s work before it transitions to a private collection.

This exhibition highlights what we now call “traditional” wedding dresses belonging to various individuals in Abilene and the surrounding areas from the late 1890s to the 1930s, most of which are in the permanent collection at The Grace Museum. 

The 20 female photographers in this exhibition, exercised technical and aesthetic ingenuity, asserted their own voices and subjectivities. Photographers Marion Post Wolcott, Mary Ellen Mark, Anne Noggle, Marilyn Bridges, Laura Gilpin, Ruth Bernard, Linda Conner, Fran Forman, Kathy Millan, Garciela Iturbide are but a few outstanding examples of women working as photographic documentarians and artists who are an important part of photographic history. This exhibition of women photographers in the Grace Museum permanent collection documents the role of women as creative forces in our contemporary culture as well as The Grace Museum’s long-standing commitment to presenting and collecting exemplary artwork by women artists.

Sherry Owens lives and works in Dallas, TX and received a BFA from Southern Methodist University. Her work has been shown throughout Texas and the southwest; in 2018, she completed a two-person site specific installation at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum in Austin, Texas, and was included in Commanding Space: Women Sculptors of Texas, at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. In 2017, Owens mounted a solo exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, and the Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University. Owens has exhibited internationally in Austria, Denmark, Germany, Greece, India, Peru, Turkey, and was recently included in The First Crosscurrent Yokohama-Texas International Artists Exchange Show 2019 at Kanagawa Prefectural Gallery in Yokohama, Japan.

Sherry Owens has completed several large public art projects, including a large-scale bronze through the Love Field Modernization Program at Love Field Airport in Dallas, TX and a monumental commission for the Ben E. Keith Company, also in Dallas. Owens is a former president of the Texas Sculpture Association, has served on various art boards and was a co-founder of the Emergency Artists’ Support League. She was the recipient of the Moss/Chumley North Texas Artist Award in 1999, was the West Texas Triangle artist in 2010 with a comprehensive survey at five west Texas museums, and received the Artist/Craftsman Award from the AIA Dallas in 2014.

The first work of art purchased for the Abilene Fine Arts Museum permanent collection was painted by a women artist, Marie Hull, in 1939, and the museum was founded by woman’s club members, many of whom were artists, This exhibit celebrates the museum’s long history of presenting and collecting the work of female artists.  This exhibition features outstanding examples of work in the permanent collection by celebrated artists Lee Krasner, Melissa Miller, Helen Altman, Kathryne Hale Travis, Mary Vernon, Hung Lu, Beili Liu, Sarah Williams, and other female artists, whose artwork stands as a testament to the important contributions made by women in the arts in the 20th and 21st century. 

Join The Center for Contemporary Arts for their 'Teacher's Lounge' Art Educators Showcase Exhibit Reception! They will honor local art educators and their art in this special exhibition! They will have a People's Choice Award so visitors can vote for their favorite artwork in the exhibit. Beer, wine, and light refreshments will be provided. Masks and social distancing are encouraged. All home school students and parents are invited to attend The Grace's monthly art classes. Topics range from fine art techniques, to art history, to culture and traditions.

ArtWalk is a monthly mini arts festival downtown hosted by the Center for Contemporary Arts. Bring the entire family to historic downtown where restaurants, shops, museums, galleries and entertainment await you! The Ani-MAY Artwalk will feature digital art demonstrations and cosplay! Adult Beverages available for purchase thanks to The Local. Special thanks to Lone Star Dry Goods for sponsoring live music from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

The Center for Contemporary Arts will host their first annual Distinguished Artist Awards, honoring local artists Ruth Jackson and Russell Ellison, as well as two posthumous awards for Ginger Womack Taylor and Van LeBus. Dinner, drinks, art and entertainment.

(Healthy Empowerment through Arts Learning) is a program developed by The Center for Contemporary Arts, and funded by the United Way of Abilene to offer warriors an opportunity for self-expression and healing.  This program fosters trust between participants, thereby increasing their trust and confidence in themselves and others, as well as increase each warrior’s (and their family’s) scope of social networks.

Warriors often struggle with feelings of anxiety and depression due to horrific experiences in their military service.  To help warriors express and cope with emotions and build resiliency, The Center for Contemporary Arts offers arts and music therapy,

ArtHEALs uses creative methods to help veterans and active-duty personnel, both individually and as a group, address social, behavioral and emotional issues, thus helping them make sense of how they fit into their world.  Therapeutic activities include artistic expression through closed eye drawing to music, movement, creating simple clay figures.

Funding from the United Way of Abilene makes it possible for The Center to offer this program to groups at no charge.

For this exhibition, ‘Journey’, Kate Breakey draws from several bodies of work made over a several decades of image making. Breakey has always altered her photographic images. Over her 40 year career, her techniques include hand coloring – laying the surface with pencil, oil paint or pastel, gilding images on glass (orotones) encaustic wax, and embroidering on silk, which she attributes too her early art school training in printmaking and painting.

The Center for Contemporary Arts will host its fifth annual Center for Contemporary Arts National Juried Competition (CCAN) and Exhibition opening events throughout the weekend. Join them as they welcome 2021 CCAN Juror, Liz Trosper, to Abilene and view art created by artists from all over the country!
