How to celebrate the Abilene way

Put on your jorts (jean shorts) and a American flag t-shirt. It's the 4th of July in Abilene, Texas. Keep reading to find a complete list of everything to do in Abilene for the 4th and how to prepare for the festivities.

Whether you are at the Fireworks Spectacular or outside the limits shooting your own fireworks, here is how to prepare for the holiday.

  • Don't hide from the sun, instead wear plenty of sunscreen
  • Beat the bugs and wear bug repellent
  • Keep a cooler full of cold water
  • Be patriotic and hang up an American flag
  • Put on your red, white & blue
  • Hold over the hunger by having plenty of grilled foods easily accessible
  • End the night with some mouth-watering s'mores
  • Watch a safe and exciting firework show!

HELLO, DOLLY!

The Paramount Theatre presents the classic Broadway musical HELLO, DOLLY! This musical adaptation of Thornton Wilder's hit play The Matchmaker bursts with humor, romance, energetic dance and some of the greatest songs in musical theatre history. The romantic and comic exploits of Dolly Gallagher-Levi, turn-of-the-century matchmaker and "woman who arranges things," are certain to thrill and entertain audiences again and again.

Lake Hike

9:00 AM-11:00 AM

On the first Saturday of each month, join the Big Country Master Naturalists at Abilene State Park for a 5-mile hike around Lake Abilene. You will need to obtain an entrance permit at the park headquarters. We will meet at the first parking lot by the lake entrance. Please wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, and bring plenty of water.

4th of July Make & Take

10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Board & Brush invites you to craft a little handmade décor designed by you or your kiddos! Please pre-register for this event. This is the only way we can guaranty the design that you are wanting. *Registration will close 24 hours in advance so that we can prepare the projects. (We will have a small selection of designs available for walk-ins.)

Patriotic Candle Making Class

11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Make your very own RED, WHITE + BLUEBERRY candle or make your own scent with our exclusive 4th of July labels made just for this event! During this experience you will discover the art + science of candle making as you are led through the process by head chandler, Jamie Foreman.

Painting with a Twist - Stars, Stripes, and Firework Nights - Add Glitter!

Earliest admission starts at 4:00 PM.

Join us for WesTex Connect's 15th Annual Fireworks Spectacular at the Abilene Zoo's Festival Gardens. Celebrate the United State's Independence with admission to the zoo, live music, Texas eats, and the BIGGEST 4th of July firework spectacular in the Big Country.

Hillcrest July 4th Neighborhood Parade

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

The 23rd annual July 4th parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. (starting at the corner of Bacon & Campus Court) followed by homemade & Blue Bell ice cream in the MPR.

Buffalo Gap 4th of July Parade

9:00 AM

Fellowship, family, and fun! No entry fee. Entrants gather at the Church of Christ at 8:30 AM – parade route will go behind the elementary school and end at Old Settlers’ Reunion. Sponsored by the Buffalo Gap Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Buffalo Gap.

4th of July at Adventure Cove

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

We know everyone will have awesome 4th of July plans but before the fireworks begin we hope you come join us to play between 1pm-5pm.Our lifeguards and concessions team will be decked out in their most patriotic attire and we hope you will too!

Fourth of July Patriotic Concert

7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Heavenly Rest’s Annual Fourth of July Patriotic Concert will be held Monday, July 4th at 7:00 p.m. on the east lawn.The Abilene Community Band will play favorite and familiar patriotic songs. You are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks, and coolers (non-alcoholic beverages, please).Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
