David McManaway’s Studio Revisited is designed to recreate the experience of visiting the studio that is now gone but certainly not forgotten by those who were privileged see firsthand McManaway’s world. An artist’s studio is typically described as a creative laboratory where all the required tools and materials await the master’s creative transformation into fine art. But, David McManaway’s studio was not typical. McManaway moved to Munger Place in Dallas from Chicago in the 1959. He soon abandoned painting in favor of assemblage; a medium that required a completely different set of tools. Over the following decades McManaway covered his studio walls, ceilings and table tops with carefully selected, reclaimed, cultural castoffs that became his primary medium. After McManaway’s death in 2010, his longtime studio assistant, Robin Ragin undertook the daunting task of documenting and saving the contents of the studio. Ragin’s efforts inspired the concept and provided the contents necessary to replicate the studio at the Grace Museum. Lenders to the exhibition and many individuals who worked with McManaway enthusiastically supported this effort to recreate this one last visit to the legendary studio.

Photographer David H. Gibson met David McManaway in 1964. A long friendship followed and in 1993 Gibson began documenting McManaway’s extraordinary studio. A visit to McManaway’s studio was akin to stepping into one of McManaway’s works of art; walls, ceilings and table tops covered with carefully selected cultural castoffs silently awaiting a second chance as fine art. Gibson’s photographs of the studio, dismantled after McManaway’s death in 2010, are as close as we can get to walking into McManaway’s unique, (Mojo) Jomo themed amusement park.

The fine art of found objects defied the status quo to become a major art movement in the last decades of the 20th century. Inspired by Picasso and Braque’s 1912 experiments with paper and print and Marcel Duchamp’s “readymades”, Dada and Surrealism made anything and everything a medium for serious art making. Appropriation of images from popular culture took the form in realistic paintings of objects, collage work and printmaking. Subsequently, the appropriation of found objects into two and three-dimensional mixed media assemblage work became the bedrock of 21st century, interactive, art installations. This exhibition presents a selection of art work based on appropriated found objects in a variety of media selected from The Grace Museum permanent collection by Kirk Hayes, Robert Rauschenberg, Vernon Fisher, Linda Ridgway, Martin Delabano, William Farr, and Clint Hamilton.

The 30 artists whose work is included in the exhibition explored the Texas landscape to create art quilts in styles ranging from representational to abstract styles. Their artwork examines our human attachment to specific places, and what makes those places meaningful and unique. The story of women's suffrage is a story of voting rights, of inclusion in and exclusion from the franchise, and of our civic development as a nation. Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence, a poster exhibition from the Smithsonian, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment and explores the complexity of the women's suffrage movement and the relevance of this history to Americans' lives today.

The crusade for women's suffrage is one of the longest reform movements in American history. Between 1832 and 1920, women citizens organized for the right to vote, agitating first in their states or territories and then, simultaneously, through petitioning for a federal amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Based on the National Portrait Gallery exhibition of the same name, Votes for Women seeks to expand visitors’ understanding of the suffrage movement in the United States. The poster exhibition addresses women's political activism, explores the racism that challenged universal suffrage, and documents the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment which prohibits the government from denying U.S. citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex. It also touches upon the suffrage movement's relevance to current conversations on voting and voting rights across America.

Votes for Women: A Portrait of Persistence is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery. This project received support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative.

The Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative, Because of Her Story is one of the country’s most ambitious undertakings to research, collect, document display and share the compelling story of women. It will deepen our understanding of women’s contributions to the nation and the world. More information about the initiative is available at womenshistory.si.edu.
