Overview
Producing a popular annual event, the Historic Village collaborates with the Center of Contemporary Arts in Abilene and area school districts for this family-friendly festival. Students from first to 12th grades make scarecrows out of all kinds of materials, following the theme-of-the-year. They are then displayed at the Village before moving downtown to the Arts Walk. The first Saturday of the display is free for the public to attend at the Village, with all the fall-festival rituals – lawn games, face painting, arts and crafts, food vendors, and music. And you can tour the entire Historic Village free-of-charge this day as well!
The 2024 theme is “The Texas Frontier” and students from Abilene ISD, Jim Ned CISD, and Merkel SD will be participating. We hear rumors that scarecrows shaped like rattlesnakes, bluebonnets, windmills, cactus, and even The Alamo may appear! Previous years have seen famous cartoons, authors, and superheroes. Plan on coming November 9 and encouraging our home-grown future Picassos and Monets!
