Day 3   Western Flavor! Continued...

  1. Load the motorcoach for Cross Shield Ranch.
The ranch tour begins with a brief orientation on local history and the origin of the XL cattle brand and the Cross Shield horse brand. The remainder of the tour presents many different aspects of ranch life. Don Long, noted horse trainer, shows you how cowboys teach their horses to become helpers; how a bond is established; how a horse that has never been ridden learns to accept saddle and rider; and how real working cowboys communicate with their horse through body language. While the other cowboys are rounding up the cattle, watch a cowboy demonstrate the art of horse shoeing. The cowboy explains the whole process; different problems; types of shoes; problems they overcome or create. Next the cowboys pen cattle and separate cows and calves. The inoculation, branding, tagging and ear marking will be explained. Throughout the day tour guests are encouraged to view activities close-up, take photos and even step up to brand a calf.
  2. Return to Abilene for the night or head out to your next destination.
